My name is Steven Capps, and to clear up any confusion for longtime subscribers, this used to be my blog on my thoughts related to writing. In the recent weeks, it has grown to be something a little more broad. Books, games, and of course writing will be central themes, so if you have an interest DnD, speculative fiction, or just want to keep up with my own work, don’t hesitate to hit the follow button on the right side of the page.
A little about myself, I am a SFF writer and the Social Media Manager for the South Carolina Army National Guard. During my undergrad I volunteered as an Associate Editor with the SFWA professional short fiction market PodCastle and I highly recommend them to anyone who loves audio fiction.
I have my B.A. in English: Writing from the American Military University, a Graduate Certificate in Social Media Management from Georgetown University, and I am in the home stretch of my MFA in Creative Writing at Southern New Hampshire University.
Almost all my work that can be found in the wild has been nonfiction though my true love is the fantasy genre. To date, I’ve earned two Honorable Mentions in the Writers of the Future contest, my short piece “Eevee” can be found in the Spring 2015 issue of AMU’s literary magazine The Bird & Dog, and you can always stop by @sc.nationalguard or @us.nationalguard on Instagram to see my work there.
Some of my favorite authors are Brandon Sanderson, China Mieville, George RR Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Joe Abercrombie, N.K Jemisin, and Robin Hobb. If you have an interest in short fiction check out “Home is a House that Loves You” by Rachael K. Jones. You will not be disappointed.
Thank you for stopping in! If you made it this far, you’re the real MVP. Before you go, don’t forget to hit the follow button if you haven’t done so already. Thanks again, and I hope you are having a wonderful day!
The Name of the Wind is a great book, just recently re-read it.

I love Patrick Rothfuss’s writing. It is so smooth that I barely realize four hours have passed when I get caught up reading his books.

Yeah I can’t wait for the third book in the series to come out.

I think I may have read all of Anne Rice and of course Stephen King. Caleb Carr, years ago I read The Alienist and the follow up to it. Hmm, fantasy? How about R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind?

I actually have never read R.A. Salvatore or Terry Goodkind, which pieces of their work are your favorite?

Goodkind has the Sword of Truth series, starting with Wizard’s First Rule. Magic, violence, sex, love…it’s an emersive world he’s constructed. Salvatore’s books are based off of some of the characters from D&D. Light reading but I enjoyed them.

Hello,
I finished my BA in English at AMU a couple years ago. I really enjoyed their program. I was introduced to so many great writers that I might not have picked up on otherwise. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I did.
Have you ever read Neil Gaiman? I’m reading American Gods now – a sort of dark fantasy you might like.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. There are all sorts of AMU gems hidden there.

I have not read American Gods yet but I just bought so it is the next book that I am going to read! Was there any class that you took at AMU that you found invaluable?

I really liked American Poetry, Modern Epic Fantasy, and Russian Lit (which I didn’t think I would like going in). There are some great instructors at AMU – I found that they could make or break a class based on their interactions. Try to research who will be teaching if at all possible before signing up.

Thank you so much for stopping by. If you do not mind me asking what do you normally catches your interest when you are reading blogs?

BRIGHT COLORS. Just kidding; something I can relate to. I like reading about pretty much anything. The only types of blogs that I generally don’t follow are ones with a) nothing but poetry, b) nothing but depressing poetry, c) ones that rarely update, d) ones that are not in English, e) ones that are just photos (artwork blogs usually get a pass if you’re really good), f) ones that are all advertising for products/books, g) ones that are just inspirational quotes (to be taken with a grain of salt), h) blogs that are ad hominem/ad feminem.

Lmao I love how your first two are about poetry. I have nothing against poetry, but I have pretty much no sense of rhythm so it makes reading poems a bit more difficult than I would like.

I’m just like…pass. I’d rather read a short story than something about raindrops and tears and dead flowers. You’re not Virginia Woolf hoe.

lmao I am pretty sure that is best statement I have ever read about poetry.

Hi Steven, I got to this page via your post on scam publishers, which I really liked. It sounds like you may be interested in joining the Military Writers Society of America. The organization is in the midst of a website overhaul, but you can still find out more here, if you are interested. http://www.mwsadispatches.com/ I’ve been a member since 2011 and currently on the board, so I thought I would pass it along. Good luck to you in all you are doing – great blog!

Thanks so much for your support! I will definitely look into it! If you don’t mind me asking, what do you normally write?

Hi Steven – the answer to your question is a complicated one. I’ve written two YA fiction novels (“Believing In Horses” and “Believing In Horses, Too”), but I’ve also written many non-fiction stories for other books and publications and my blog. The writing for my business, Veteran Writing Services, LLC, is mostly technical writing. Nice to “meet” you, and let’s stay in touch!
